Taliban allow widows to work in bakeries again in Afghanistan
Afghanistan's hardline Taliban rulers reversed themselves and said the United Nations could reopen bakeries that employ widows and feed the poor. The shift followed a Taliban order to shut 25 bakeries and send home 360 women workers. Wakil Ahmad Mutawakkil said there was no objection to women working at bakeries. The bakeries, started by the World Food Program, paid widows to bake bread sold at subsidized prices in a war torn country.
