Lawrence Memorial Hospital will raise a U S flag atop a new pole donated through the efforts of Chester Woodrum a long time hospital employee. The ceremony today led by Mayor Marnie Argersinger marked a two year project begun when Woodrum offered to fund the flagpole and flag which once flew over the Capitol in Washington D C. The flag was obtained via Senator Robert Dole's office and a base plaque explains the donor and origin.

A Missouri Pacific freight train derailed near Gar nett Kansas damaging 14 of 16 cars and sending a grain car into the Hiatt residence. Mrs James Hiatt, 40, was treated for back injuries and abdominal pains and later moved to Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City. Her husband and 11 year old daughter received minor injuries. Police report the train traveled on impact after derailing on a curve near downtown, with cars leaking cargo including wheat and soybeans.
The Secret Service uses call signs for White House figures. Carter is Deacon, Ford Pass Key, Nixon Searchlight, Johnson Volunteer, Kennedy Lancer. WHCA officials say names are chosen from a DoD list for speed and clarity, with no formal method.
