Eskimos Report Hearing Engines In Arctic Search
Eskimos at Barter island 300 miles east of Barrow reported hearing engine noise four or five days ago while trading. The sighting could not confirm a plane, and the search for the missing Soviet transpolar flight was halted by stormy weather. Pilot Bob Randall said the noise might have been the Russian plane, as six airmen planned a 4,000 mile hop from Moscow. Russian pilot Sigismund Levaneffsky and five others were last heard after crossing the pole. Jimmy Mattern and Joe Crosson prepared to join the search in northern Alaska while Moscow noted faint, unclear signals.

Kansas Corn Crop Near Failure Warns Meteorologist
A. D. Robb, federal meteorologist, says the 1937 Kansas corn crop is near failure. He notes rain could save some corn in southeastern and northeastern counties, but in the eastern half less than 25 percent will make grain and western Kansas faces general failure. Drought has dented ears and fodder cutting has begun in drier areas as water is hauled for livestock.
