County may balk at Sixth Street request
Douglas County commissioners show reluctance to revisit a 1993 interlocal agreement that restricts road funding for Sixth Street widening from Wakarusa Drive to the South Lawrence Trafficway. They weigh impacts on the Eastern Parkway plan and downtown, with costs around 4.6 million dollars and a 1999 grant target.

Western Resources seeks 36 million rate hike in Kansas
Western Resources filed for a 36 million increase in natural gas rates for Kansas customers affecting about 600000 customers. The Kansas Corporation Commission would review the proposal, which would raise average monthly natural gas bills around 3.80 dollars. The change covers several towns while Lawrence Public Service Co. remains unaffected. The company cites replacement of service lines and rising operating costs as reasons, inviting public comments and possible hearings.
