Lawrence public school teachers face a unclear salary for the new year as a federal wage freeze keeps pay at last year’s level for at least 90 days. Board president Dr. W F Bradley and Carl Knox delayed commitments awaiting legal guidance while valuation based raises remain uncertain.
Prosecution witness testifies Capt. Ernest Medina told Charlie Company on the eve of the March 16 1968 My Lai assault to avoid harming noncombatants. Other witnesses recount Medina’s awareness of killings and his lack of intervention as Lt. Calley was convicted.

A 15 year old girl who joined five men in the January 14 Fidelity State Bank holdup in Kansas City Kansas was sentenced by U S District Judge Wesley E Brown to a federal prison term until October 17 1976 The sentence runs until the girl reaches age 21.
Kansas University begins fall activities with 335 men pledged during summer rush and 250 expected to register for rush week at Temple Hall. Rick Labbert notes more freshmen showed interest this year, boosting rushee numbers past 150. Pledging dates span Thursday and Friday with nine and five visits respectively.
Lawrence High sophomores report Wednesday to pay a 14 dollar yearly fee and check out textbooks for the coming school year. Students attend in reverse alphabetical order. those unable to attend may report from 7 to 8 p.m. Juniors paid fees today and more than 400 seniors reported on Monday. Students not present on their day should report to the LHS office at once.
Perry Lake at 891.30 feet above sea level sits just under the planned 891.5. Rainfall is light and water remains murky while fishing is fair to good at the 12,500 acre lake, 16 miles northwest of Lawrence. A year earlier the level was 888.13 feet. Lawrence elementary enrollment for new students is Thursday with hours 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Birth certificates and immunization records are required.
Lawrence and Douglas County advance a 5.975 million dollar government complex proposal. The plan, discussed at a Ramada Inn meeting, hinges on a 5.64 million dollar bond issue and possible building commission formation. Arbitration and 28 percent city ownership are included while needed state legislation covers long term obligations.
Peterson, superintendent of the Buffalo Altoona Unified School District, is elected president of the Kansas State High School Activities Association. He succeeds Don Musick of Concordia, who resigned from the board due to increased duties at Concordia High School. Musick led the association as president for the past two years, and Peterson has served on the executive board since 1967.
The county votes to finance a new building with a 5.64 million dollar bond. A 335 thousand dollar residual from the building fund levy funds land acquisition near the courthouse. Prior large bonds include 3.8 million for Lawrence schools in 1966 and 2.25 million for city projects in 1967.
The Lawrence board unanimously okayed a 1971 72 school year budget totaling 7 117 285 with a 34 41 mill levy in USD 497 and pre unification indebtedness. Four prior districts Riverside India Wakarusa Valley and Grant still pay bonds. Eight new teachers were hired and a station wagon for field trips was approved after staff input.
Lawrence district principals say there is no fixed rule for scheduling kindergarten morning or afternoon sessions. Decisions depend on parental requests, bus capacity, child age definitions, and gender balance, with letters informing families of session assignments as classes begin September 2.
