Senate investigators questioned a possible conflict of interest involving George M. Humphrey former secretary of the Treasury and gains from a nickel contract. Auditor testimony showed Humphrey held Hanna Co. stock and mining units that rose in value by 5.756 million dollars and yielded 2.347 million in dividends between 1953 and 1961. Humphrey, age 72 from Cleveland, is due to testify Thursday before the Senate Armed Services subcommittee led by Senator Symington.

State prints audit of printing plant follows employee complaints

Boy, 4, Found Tied in Crib. Father Held
Independence police found 4-year-old William Richard Bray tied face down in a crib with boot laces and a necktie. The father, Tom Bray, a dairy deliveryman, was arrested on cruelty to a child charge after the boy was located at the Bray home. The child had reportedly been tied down off and on for two years, with wrists bound to the crib and ankles strapped tight, preventing head turn. The boy was taken to the Jackson County Parental Home. The family near U.S. 40 and Noland Road includes nine children, with a 16-year-old daughter who let officers inside. The parents were at Independence Hospital visiting another daughter.

Three Persons Injured In Turnpike Collision Near Lawrence
Three people were injured in a Kansas Turnpike crash three miles east of the Lawrence service area. James E. Heimrich, 21, his wife Erika, 21, and daughter Terry, 2, from Wichita, were treated for cuts and bruises and released. Clarence J. Hemmel, 20, of Jefferson City, Missouri, escaped injury. The 4:25 am incident involved two westbound cars. Heimrichs suffered total vehicle damage while Hemmel’s car sustained $200 damage.
