Mining Life in Spitzbergen Reveals Harsh Yet Safe Conditions
Longyear City Spitzbergen Aug 1 Associated Press Mining here presents unique features a long trek from Longyear City to the mine entrance across a moraine filled valley to snow packed slopes. Open cable cars hoist workers 800 feet up at steep angles to a mountain gallery with continuous air and a steady five degrees of frost year round. Dust is rare due to outside snowshoveling and fossil ice supports the galleries. American electric traction moves coal to a high outlet and down to the harbor via endless tip lines.
