Cotton gains ground in Kansas wheat country
Kansas cotton farmer Carl Seeliger and his son Mike plan to harvest about 700 acres this fall after building a local gin to serve growers. Seeliger, initially skeptical after reading a profitability leaflet in the 1980s, cites strong yields and lower fertilizer needs. He notes Kansas planted about 15,000 acres this year, with Seeliger’s operation in Cowley County near the Oklahoma line.

Last budget hearing offers taxpayers input opportunity
Wednesday marks the final chance for taxpayers to comment on the budget though input is limited. County Administrator Craig Weinang notes the commission can only cut expenditures, not add to the draft. State law prohibits adding to the draft after publication, and most public comment occurs at July hearings before publication. Weinang cites better turnout in prior years and that commissioners act on early hearing input.
