The Daily Journal notes a Lawrence lodge meeting this Wednesday evening with members urged to attend. Advertisements promote Hunt's store sales including elegant blacks silks, cashmeres, embroideries, shetland shawls, laces, hosiery, corsets, and initial handkerchiefs. A tent and camp invalid bed are offered for sale by Geo W. Bowes.
Miss M Lewis opens office near Lawrence House and Harris heads the culinary dept at a new restaurant with a blackberry remedy promoted. Republicans Gale and Gate noted in Willow Springs. August 12 1879 reports on a new self education plan for county teachers led by Miss Brown and Prof McLouth with local supporters.
A visit to Rose Brook Farm near Douglas City reveals a 160 acre estate with six acres of grapes producing five to seven hundred pounds daily. The farm also houses a 60 cow dairy, Jerseys and Durhams, with a well equipped milk house and pit for water management. Mill, corn, millet and pasture support the herd as Palmer plans further stock barns and improvements.
The rent situation at Plowman’s property two miles west of town leads to a conflict with neighbor Mr Lamborn who farms the adjoining lot. Lamborn confronts Randall while mowing near the well, calls him a derogatory name, and a scuffle ensues in which Randall disarms Lamborn and rescues himself. Randall plans legal action after summoning the sheriff.
A U S Senate investigating committee led by Samuel J. Kirkwood arrives in Lawrence to examine Cheyenne prisoners linked to the prior fall outbreak and Camp Robinson causes. The session at Ludington House is private. testimony focuses on reason for departure from northern home, treatment on southern reservation, and the raid's origins. The party plans to depart for Wichita and the Indian Territory after completion of interviews.
The News reports Emporia Congregationalists have raised 3000 dollars toward a new church building with Rev. Cordley’s supporters pleased. Emporia is seen as capable of supporting a larger church and Pougian County’s growth. A caller from Palmyra township notes Stover’s machine business and a crop year ahead of last, with yields toward thirty to thirty five bushels per acre.
DL Ley offers buying selling and loan services with a wide list of properties near Douglas and adjoining counties. Listings include frame houses on large lots near churches and railroads, farms from 10 to 160 acres with corn and wheat, and payment plans. Also notes about medicines and local druggists, with Adams and Tro druggists.
Maryons Office Lawrence Kansas announces a special election in the Fifth ward to fill a vacancy caused by Councilman C W Lawrence. The vote is set for Tuesday August 24 1879 from 9 a m to 5 p m on Locust Street opposite the Kansas Pacific depot. Mayor J Plush erAttest F Mexet City Clerk BAT
City Clerk informs electors of the Fifth ward that the poll-book closes for registration at 5 o clock p.m. Friday August 15 for a special election to be held Tuesday August 26. The notice is dated August 8, 1874, Lawrence Kansas.
