Physical activity grows in Lawrence school life
In a back-to-school wellness feature Karrey Britt reports Langston Hughes students Molly Boecker and Adam Boecker run a mile before classes twice weekly as part of the Bobcat Marathon Club started in 2006. About 100 classmates joined last year for a 26.2 mile marathon. Parents Michael and Janet Boecker praise the program for getting kids moving and posting photos and T shirt rewards for marathon completes.

Police and fire unions reach tentative four year pay deal
City leaders announced a tentative four year agreement with the police and fire unions including annual wage increases through 2015 and merit raises for many officers and firefighters. The plan, still needing union ratification and city approval, widens pay gaps with non union city staff and targets bringing public safety wages toward regional averages.
