U.S. war buildup in Viet Nam may reach Korea scale by Christmas
President Johnson says more fighting men will be required and sent to Viet Nam as U.S. forces near end-year levels reach about 400 000 with 290 000 in country and 60 000 offshore. Sen. Stennis and Pentagon officials discuss possible strength up to 450 000–600 000, signaling a larger commitment and potential for intensified conflict.
