Air Force admits telegram about prisoner Schmidt
The Air Force says it notified Una Schmidt in June 1954 that her husband Daniel C. Schmidt was reported a prisoner in Red China. She says she learned of the wartime status only in November 1954 after remarrying Alford Fine, while Schmidt, one of 11 released airmen, was due to arrive at Travis Air Force Base near San Francisco. Her lawyer reports she lives with her son in a Nevada City area trailer and declined comment. The Air Force says it has a Western Union receipt for delivery of the telegram and could not confirm the signer.
