Memorial Hospital in Tom McNulty and Oskaloosa reported several births including a baby boy to Mrs. Betty Jean Vestat and baby boy to Mrs. Nina Bruce both in Tonganoxie and Washington D C resident John A Shirkey noted. Mary Lou Rice was treated in the emergency room after injuring her right hand and arm sharpening a butcher knife.

Jaycees Approve Car Check Program and Hospital Gifts

The Lawrence Junior Chamber of Commerce voted to spend 3225 for supplies for a free car check in late August. Local mechanics will assist with inspections at a designated site. They also approved 50 for Operation Brotherhood and 96 for fans for Lawrence Memorial Hospital funded by proceeds from a Jaycee auction.

City council approves bonds and water rate hike during marathon meeting

In a 44 hour session the council authorized 132 150 storm sewer bonds and 198 000 sewer notes for contracted projects. The water connection charge rises from 50 to 85 for 3 4 inch lines with higher rates for larger connections and rural customers. The old West Hills water tank is offered for 1000 to a Des Moines firm. restoring it would cost about 6000. Priorities for paving were not set. K U Graduate Named Tax Research Attorney for Chamber

Roy H. Johnson, Kansas University graduate, is appointed tax research attorney for the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce. The post begins Sept. 1. Johnson, research director since 1943 for the Kansas Industrial Development Commission, also previously worked with the Kansas Legislative Council in taxation. He holds A.B. and LL.B. degrees from KU. He will direct a state wide tax education program and act as legislative representative on tax matters. He will advise Chamber councils on state taxation and finance, federal taxation and social legislation.

Poisoned by platypus in Brisbane fishing incident

Mrs. Caroline Waldron, 65, was scratched by a platypus while removing a hook on the Mary River 200 miles north of Brisbane. She was taken to hospital with a poisoned arm and is recovering.
