London reports German air raids disrupted by heavy losses to the RAF and keepers of the air, with about 60 German planes destroyed and 16 British planes lost. British authorities urge civilians to stay indoors as raids continue over Dover and the channel.
Secretary Morgenthau forecast a 5.7 billion dollar federal deficit for the year and urged Congress to raise revenue with an excess profits tax. He said the tax could yield 300 to 500 million yearly and urged prompt action on pending measures to aid defense contracts and rate of amortization for new factories.
Thurman Arnold describes an economic fifth column in U S defense industries with German patent control via licensed American firms. Grand juries in New York and eight other cities probe production bottlenecks and price fixing, aiming to indict violations and curb anti-competitive practices.

Willkie will speak briefly from Fold High School steps. John Charles Thomas and a comedy act headline the pre-event entertainment with Walter O Keefe as master of ceremonies.

Army gridman Harry Heffner, 20, West Point football captain in his second year, diagnosed with infantile paralysis. Heffner visited his parents Major and Mrs. Pete T. Heffner Jr. at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, after illness began Wednesday. He earned numerals in football tennis and basketball at West Point.
Italian aircraft bombed British warships in the Gulf of Aden yesterday without damage. A British naval plane damaged Italian military headquarters at Zeila, the recently captured port in British Somaliland, the admiralty said.
