Boston Supreme Court denied habeas corpus and stay petitions for Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti as protests spread from Boston to New York and Paris. Authorities warned of possible copies while a Toronto hushed counterstrike surfaced in cautious reports.
Weather stopped the Chicago Cubs versus Brooklyn Robins game in the second inning with Brooklyn leading by one. A doubleheader is scheduled for tomorrow. batteries listed as and Deberry for Brooklyn and Carlson and Hartnett for Chicago. Other league games postponed by rain include New York at Pittsburgh and Boston at St. Louis. In the American League, Boston overcame Detroit 3 to 2 at Fenway, with Stoner and Woodall starring for Boston and Ruffing for Detroit.
Naomi Fishman 20 of Tribune Kansas died in an early Sunday wreck on Morrison road north of Denver. Edward Seerie 23 and Helen Herrington 17, both Denver residents, were dying after the car overturned and pinned them beneath. Seerie, a Colorado School of Mines graduate student, was driving. The young women studied dramatics locally. A separate notice reports a forgery complaint filed Saturday by County Attorney George K. Melvin against Jess Sears for uttering a forged check at Dunmire's grocery, Sears arrested July 30.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight with showers this afternoon in southeast areas, followed by cooler highs in the east and south on Tuesday. Hutchinson reports heavy rain, Salina and Pittsburg had rain, Emporia, Ottawa, Arkansas City cloudy, Wichita clearing, Coffeyville clear, with light rain last night. Coffeyville roads are soft, Arkansas City rough, other roads middling. Douglas County roads muddy. Temperature details unclear due to garbled text.

Hoquiam Washington August AP report quotes Congressman Albert Johnson warning aliens domiciled in the United States not to be swayed by sympathy or misinformation as the Sacco and Vanzetti execution approaches. Johnson says anti government demonstrations risk deportation under the 1919 act and stresses aliens’ implications with regard to entry and loyalty.
Franklin Watts owner of the Book Nook will move to Wichita on October 24 to manage the new book department at the George Innes store. The store plans a new building making it the largest department store in Kansas, surpassing Oklahoma. Watts will retain ownership and supervision of the Book Nook. Also noted is the sudden death of veteran ball player and manager William O Gilbert in New York.
Across Kansas heavy weekend rains brought significant totals in many towns. Iola and Liberal reported flooding and field impacts while Barton and Saline counties anticipated good corn yields. Pittsburg saw torrential downpours with swift river rises and wind damage. Local towns logged 1.20 to 3.34 inches, with the Neosho river near flood stage in places and widespread electrical storms.
The city commission may decide whether corn shucks and watermelon rinds are garbage or trash as a dispute grows since the city recently took over trash hauling. Residents say unsightly alleys and unanswered householder appeals prompted action, with a partial agreement reached but no final resolution.
Kansas City August 8 AP Fenton Stockard state blue sky commissioner and the Kansas City better business bureau launched an inquiry into reports that several persons bought shares in the Perrigo invention. In a Saturday demonstration Perrigo appeared to drive a motor car using electricity drawn from the air, witnessed by Lou Holland Col Paul Henderson and others. Perrigo allowed inspection of the motor car but refused electrical expert examination.
Large crowd attended Union Church services at South Park where Prof Paul B Lawson discussed Esther themes. He compared Vashti Esther Haman Mordicai to highlight dignity courage independence and faithfulness. Miss Bertha Alice Perkins sang Jésus Lover of My Soul and I Have Not Seen with Jessie May Tucker on piano.
The two and a half mile pavement from Midland to the Jefferson county line on highway 73 is postponed to Friday due to last week’s rain. Delays hinder shoulder work while the slab dries and is ready for traffic. Completion of the final Douglas county segment north of Lawrence leaves two hard surfaced lanes from Lawrence to Topeka, with opening tentatively set for Friday August 12.

Elmer Kelley twelve-year-old boy drowned in the Neosho river near Emporia Kansas late Saturday. Three hours after being swept into a deep pool by the current his body was recovered.
County commissioners, in regular session, approved petitions for opening a township road extending north from West Nineteenth and a new sewer in University Heights. The road will improve access to university grounds and ease southward traffic toward federal highway No. 73W from the campus. The new state law allows residents of platted areas outside city limits to petition for improvements.
A university party led by Dr H H Lane and including Ernest Kaiser former New York American Museum staff and Lawrence Wilson returned to Lawrence after six weeks in Wyoming’s Bridger Basin. They collected about 500 vertebrate fossil specimens from the Eocene, including an early fossil horse and a primitive primate. The findings enlarge the museum’s fossil series across epochs from early Eocene to Pleistocene, as Kaiser stays on as a laboratory assistant this fall.
President Coolidge mourns Leonard Wood in a public message to Mrs Wood noting his eminent service to the nation and the Philippines. The telegraph praises Wood for selfless devotion, guiding government toward peace and recognizing him as a true friend to Filipinos.
AM grain prices rose sharply as frost damage to crops was reported in several districts. Wheat near the close climbed, and corn hit the highest level yet as buying orders surged. Rapid City August 8 AP Hodges the Republican National Committee treasurer said the party will be able to nominate a president and win next year. He refused to discuss President Coolidge’s remarks about not running or potential successors.
The Douglas County PZA picnic moves from Holcom's Grove to Woodland Park due to road work. Judge CLAL Smart of Lawrence will speak at 2 PM, with a baseball game at 11 AM and a 3 PM CPA baseball match between Belvoir and Lone Star. James W. Anderson of the Poupins County Farmers Union told Rotary that farmers today face profitless selling of crops. He cited government reports showing farm efficiency rising 47 percent over years, vs manufacturing gains, and warned that many farmers struggle to cover costs, reducing farm tenancy and numbers. Three Kansas City women aged about 40 were dumped near Lawrence by a driver who lured them from Kansas City to Los Angeles for 50. He vanished after claiming a steering repair stop. Luggage valued around 600, including an organ worth 200, was left in his car. The driver, a 20 year old with gray black hair, drove off in a California licensed car bearing a Billings mark. The women notified police and sheriff and returned to Kansas City.
The body of Carl C. Muzzy, a pressman for Fraternal Aid Union, was found Sunday morning after being last seen Friday at a Six Corners road house east of Lawrence. Investigators say he drove onto a railroad bed, repeated the maneuver, and backed into a ditch near a Union Pacific line. Officials report prior rumors of illicit beer sales at the Six Corners establishment, but no charges have been filed.
Lawrence Mass August 8 AP Arthur T Walker of Brooklyn heir to Methuen multienillionaire Edward Fy Searles died last night at the Searles mansion Windham. Walker died two hours after indigestion attack. He had been confidant of Vietor Searles. Vietor had contested the will after Eduard Fy Searles died August 16 1020. The suit moved to break the will and was settled. Vietor Searles was awarded about a million dollars.
Eleven cars were seen in a ditch on the Fort to Fort highway Saturday night as rain slicked the pavement. Drivers hurried to get home in the rain, but no injuries were reported. A washing machine stolen from a local store last week was found after a salesman failed to return it during a Perry home demonstration.
