Ten white men departed Lawrence yesterday for pre induction physical examinations for armed service at Fort Leavenworth led by George Albert Lamb of Sunflower. Others named include Probert R. LaMont Wichita Lorin Anthony Snow 640 New Jersey street Arthur Raymond Patterson 1423 Laura avenue Orbie Harvey Hardister 125 Elm wood street Vallie Pat Boren Sunflower Howard Cecil Vincent LeRoy Seas Sunflower James Hennesh Lindsey Nathanial Page Sunflower and Mrs R C Langley of the canteen corps and Mr and Mrs W C Beerdmen of the home service canteen assisted by volunteers who provided refreshments before departure.

Byrne Bros. of this city says it has a contract from the late President’s estate executors to build a white marble monument for Franklin D Roosevelt’s unmarked grave at Hyde Park. Work has begun though a completion date is not set. The eight by four by three foot monument will bear only the inscription Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882 1945 and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt 1889.
Up Lt Glen T. Mize 23 son of Paul Mize of Bonner Springs Kansas was killed in a plane crash during a routine training flight near Waco Texas Sunday night. The accident occurred during training duties and the cause is under investigation. He is survived by his father and is to be buried in Kansas.
President Truman, confident the atomic bomb will shorten the war with Japan, nears U S shores aboard the USS Augusta after leaving shore a month ago. He tells crew the bomb power surpasses 20 000 tons of TNT and plans a radio report on the Berlin Big Three meeting.
A New York report explains the atomic bomb’s power growth is slow and costly. It notes two million dollars to make the first device and that current yields are limited. Long years of research may bring either limited explosive force or practical power for heating and machines at very low cost.

Walter Shirk of Route 5 was brought to Memorial hospital near 6 PM with a compound fracture of the right thigh and badly torn right leg muscles after his body became caught in a hay baler he was operating. He was reported resting fairly well this afternoon.
Capt. Emery J. Bowen of Lawrence assumed command of the Lawrence and Ottawa German prisoner of war camps last Sunday. He succeeds Maj. M. E. Hollicke and Lt. James T. Ivory, who have returned to Fortey base. Bowen, his wife and son living at 608 Kentucky street, has prior grocery work in Lawrence and served in World War I and World War II. The Lawrence camp opened April 30 with 100 prisoners, rose to 320 during harvest, then dropped to 175 and will host prisoners until November 1 for farm work and at local plants.
Virgil Cleveland a 28 year old man released from Leavenworth federal prison escaped a habeas corpus hearing by leaping from a courthouse window and floating downstream on a railroad tie. He was captured near the Missouri River after officers pursued him with rifles and riot guns. The habeas corpus case was dropped and Cleveland was to be sent back to San Quentin.
Three white men left Lawrence for induction into the armed forces. Charles Edward Ince of Nineteenth and Haskell streets led the group with Roy Owen of Kansas City and Jack Osborn of 1145 Reed Street.
Major General and Mrs Arthur Tooze purchase 940 Mississippi Street from Lavene Vincent. Tooze in Europe with army engineers and plans to retire after the war. Mrs Tooze stays with her nephew Ted Shoemaker family and will move into the new home by September 1.
Los Angeles August 7 The Crosby research foundation involved in atomic energy extraction tests by Larry Crosby reports a pea size detonation created a desert hole large enough to swallow a house. The tests were conducted in desert country near Los Angeles with secrecy maintained.
The Board of Education adopted an 18.53 mill budget for district 60, splitting 15.53 mills for the general fund and 3 mills for a building fund, an increase of 7.53 mills from last year. The district has no bonded debt and may face land purchases for a future building or site options, with the total budget projected at 839,200 for the year and instructional services rising to 246,975.
Topeka Aug 7 Albert B Martin marks twenty years as league general attorney and counselor for the League of Kansas Municipalities. John G Stutz lauds Martin for answering questions on state and local government to many public officials. He is dean of the league's general attorneys and has edited manuals used statewide.

Churchill asked Australia for all the uranium it could produce for atomic bombs early last year. Mount Painter, the commonwealths only source, began operations promptly with machinery installed within six weeks and roads and an airport built to ship the element out. Exact use remained a secret.

E. C. Quigley the athletic director at the University of Kansas was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital this morning with pneumonia. He and Mrs. Quigley had been in Kansas City yesterday and he became ill about 3 o'clock this morning.
London August 7 UPI The new British cabinet met at No 10 Downing Street with Prime Minister Attlee presiding. Attlee and Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin attended after recent Potsdam postings. many ministers were not appointed until the prior Saturday.
Troops returning from Europe are listed with arrivals on ships. On the S S General Bill due at Boston August 3 are Set Doyle Q. Pair of 212 West Seventh Street Lawrence. On the S S John Erickson due at New York August 6 are T Sgt Kermit E. Opperman of 2308 Vermont Street Lawrence and Pfc Guy D. Hunsinger of 925 Alabama Street Lawrence.
