Reported Allied offensives begin at Rheims and Soissons pushing German forces back beyond the Aisne toward the Hindenburg Line, signaling a widening strategic push. Strong forces aim to outflank and force German withdrawal to prepared positions, with rising tempo and broader front coverage across key towns.
British artillery and German withdrawals mark a fluid Vesle sector as Crown Prince Rupprecht pulls back from La Bassée canal positions and German gains along the Lys salient. French and American units push recon missions north of the Vesle while Fismes remains a flashpoint amid shifting lines.

Miss Ethel McCartney died in Christ's hospital Topeka and will be buried at Oak Hill cemetery after arriving on the 5:23 Santa Fe. She long served as principal at Pinckney and Van Buren schools. David Frantz, 1636 New Hampshire street, suffered paralysis Friday and remains unconscious.
County commissioners advertise for bids on paving and two course concrete pavement plus sidewalk and railing. Bids opened October 7. project includes grade establishment on Bridge street and city county cost sharing. City considers a patent heating device trial for City Hall with a December 15 end date.
W Nash has been appointed assistant director of aircraft production and is in charge of engineering and production for the government. He is president of Nash Motors Co. of Kenosha Wisconsin and a leader in engine building.
The Lawrence public school will have a supervisor of music next term, in cooperation with the University. Minerva Hall is named as the new supervisor with a contract authorized. Miss Hall will teach at the University School of Fine Arts part time and devote the rest to city schools, with about three fourths of her salary paid by the University.
The McAlister School Board discussed water use and conservation. Officials ordered a pathoetiological survey of the water and possible public closure if unsafe. Neighbors were allowed drinking water but reports of misuse lowered the supply. Steps will be taken to conserve if the supply remains safe.
Governor W. R. Stubbs, returning from a state speaking tour, is optimistic about the race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination. He will receive today’s primary returns at his Windmill Hill home, noting a clean campaign and well-informed voters. Returns won’t be fully available until tomorrow due to harvest duties. city results should arrive by nine p.m. with possible figures from Baldwin and Eudora.
Lawrence High School will offer a compulsory home nursing course for senior girls next year. Miss Clara Mears, the school nurse, will lead a 15-lesson program with classes of twenty, free of charge. After completion, students may take a Red Cross–administered exam for a small fee.
War Savings and Thrift Stamp sales at the Lawrence post office for July total 339040. Most proceeds from War Savings Stamps as Thrift Stamp sales slow with school start. Fewer than six pledges remain unpaid from the campaign begun June 28.
The Pinckney School district's board elected S Uriess as president succeeding S W Holloway with four new officers. Holloway served as president prior. W M Tucker named janitor. F F Crocker’s salary raised by 150 a year. Also noted is the death of Anna Broeker at age 27 with funeral arrangements pending.
Forty five draftees from Jefferson and Leavenworth counties were guests in Lawrence for an hour, receiving supper at two local restaurants before heading to Fort Riley. Of the group twenty eight were white and seventeen were colored, with Jefferson contributing fifteen whites and Leavenworth thirteen. They arrived at 6 10 and departed at 7 14.
