Nixon arms budget sails to Senate at 21 billion

The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a 21 billion military authorization giving the Nixon administration most of its requests for major weapons programs. A small cut to Safeguard missile defense was kept and no extension to Washington area. The Navy F14 funds were restored for 48 jets. Nixon Says Troops in Viet Are in Defensive Positions

President Nixon announced remaining U S troops in Vietnam have moved to defensive positions signaling a de facto end to U S offensive ground combat. Defense Secretary Laird said the first phase of Vietnamization is virtually completed with further withdrawals planned through December and November announcements.

Court continues hearings for two preliminary hearings in heroin raids

Douglas County Court postponed preliminary hearings for James Spotts III of Topeka and Thomas Bournival of Canton after missing witnesses. Spotts will appear Aug 18 with bond reduced to 10 000. Bournival awaiting decision on today hearing as witness was present, bond set at 100 000. Beechum, 25, remains jailed with bonds totaling 15 000 for heroin possession and conspiracy charges.

Two Turnpike Rains Cause Kansas Crashes

A Wednesday downpour caused two Kansas Turnpike crashes with about 1800 dollars in vehicle damage. Luther Wright and wife Margaret of Topeka escaped a Cadillac wreck near milepost 36 while Margaret was treated for back pains at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. A second crash at milepost 43 involved August Liedel of Sidney Nebraska and Martha Crosley of Baldwin Missouri. two passengers from Evansville Indiana were treated for bruises.
