Board Approves Haskell Agreement for Shared Facility Use

The Unified School District 497 board approved a plan allowing Haskell Institute to use South Junior High School’s gym for basketball. It saves about $3,000 yearly by exchanging facility use with Lawrence High School’s access to Haskell stadium for football and track. The deal requires no money and has both districts’ approvals.

Miss Rodeo Queen Contest Opens Douglas Fair Events

The Douglas County Fair features seven 4-H Rodeo Queen hopefuls seen in color parade on opening night with one crowned Miss Rodeo Queen for the two rodeo performances. Contestants include Mary Beth Webb representing Palmyra 4-H and Jane Rice for Lone Star 4-H. drill team aims for nationals in Milwaukee. Fire crews monitor smoldering brush pile blaze in Lawrence

A smoldering brush pile was checked but allowed to burn at 9 25 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 3rd and Elm Streets in Lawrence as firefighters reported.

At Fort Riley Kansas specialists from clergy to ex convicts aid recovering deserting soldiers. The Correctional Training Facility guides about 1800 trainees eight weeks each focusing on causes of desertion such as finances and family stress while using psychologists lawyers and ex inmates to reform them.

Doctor’s Items Stolen From Car Near Hospital

A small quantity of medicines and physicians instruments valued at 170 dollars were stolen from Dr. Ralph Reed’s car at Lawrence Memorial Hospital between 1 30 and 6 30 p m. The top of the convertible was slit to enter. Police also report one assault involving two boys. Boyd Sherman eight and Ron Christie were assaulted near 13th and Tenn Streets after Christie yelled at a man driving erratically. The attacker, with short red hair and glasses, drove a gold and tan two door Chevrolet.

Dillon's Strike Impacts Local Dillon Stores

A late Monday night strike by truck drivers against the Dillon's chain may affect two local stores though the extent is unclear. The Teamsters Union recently became the bargaining agent for Dillon's drivers after a failed agreement. Local manager Keith Lucas had no update while stating Dillon's delivers most non perishables with their own trucks and perishables are bought locally.
