Johnson Silent On Plan To End Airline Strike

Secretary Wirtz told Congress the administration has not yet taken a position on a law to end the 29 day old airline strike. He avoided calling it an emergency and warned action would set new ground. The Senate approved a measure to end the strike and send the IAM back to work for 30 days, with possible extension. Johnson favored the Senate version but did not commit. Union leaders warned slower work if Congress acts.
