Cartoon Cartoon Causes Japanese Protest
The Aug issue of Vanity Fair sparked a Japanese protest over a caricature of Emperor Hirohito. Japanese officials banned the magazine in Japan and condemned the depiction as insulting to the emperor and the Japanese people. Officials noted strong feelings for the imperial house and warned the caricature could inflame anti American sentiment. Vanity Fair editor Frank Crowinshield defended the joke as harmless in a serious magazine. Later reports said Tokyo feared public unrest and considered approaching the magazine, while Washington saw the matter as a cultural clash of viewpoints. Also, Tootka reported road contracts totaling about 300000 dollars awarded by the state highway commission to low bidders after meetings across the state.
