Stowall Named Long Range Planner for Lawrence-Douglas

Garner Stowall 29 will join the Lawrence-Douglas County planning department as long range planner on Aug. 29 with a master’s degree from Oklahoma University. He has been a regional planner for the Chikaskia Golden Belt and Indian Hills association and led local planning programs in Pratt. Hedrick cited his neighborhood volunteer work and plans to develop Pinckney and Oread area plans. The post has been vacant since February after Deane Vieux resigned.

Ward becomes head of J-W circulation

David Ward, 22, of 802 Avalon Rd., was named circulation manager of the Journal-World on Aug. 1. A 1974 Lawrence High School graduate, he has worked at the paper three years and was assistant circulation manager since January. He is married to Bonnie S. Roper of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Ward of Lawrence. He attended Harding College and KU Journalism School. Ron House, former circulation manager, joined Stauffer Publications in Topeka.

Escapee Miller Recaptured in Denver After Kansas Penitentiary Break

Kansas corrections secretary said Larry Miller, who escaped July 19 from the Kansas Penitentiary with Roy E. Schultz, was arrested by FBI in Denver and held by Denver police pending transfer. Schultz was recaptured July 24 in Bloomington, Illinois. Miller, 30, from Kansas City, Kan, served 1 to 10 years for theft.

Douglas County Free Fair schedule outlined with daily events

The six day fair starts Monday at 9 a.m. with a horse show. Entry reception is Tuesday 4 30 to 8 30 p.m. for Wednesday through Saturday contests. Wednesday features judging from 8 30 a m to 7 30 p m including home economics, tractor pull, steers, dogs, sheep, crops, gardens, poultry, dairy, swine, horticulture, food sale, dairy cattle, beef fitting. Thursday covers 4 H FFA steer judging breeding beef rabbit judging home economics judging and demolition derby. Friday includes dairy cattle judging live stock contests and pony pull plus live stock auction. Saturday begins 8 a m goat show and ends with a 7 to 8 p m public style review and awards.

Weickers Divorce Granted to Marie Louise Weicker in Connecticut

Marie Louise Weicker obtained a divorce from Sen. Low ell P. Weicker Jr. in Stamford Connecticut. Superior Court Judge William J. Tierney Jr. sealed the file at both parties request. The writ cites irretrievable breakdown and assets over 100000 with alimony child support and custody sought for at least one of their three children aged 10 to 19.

KU Law building OK'd after inspection

State architect Louis Krueger ruled the Kansas University law school building substantially complete after a Monday site review. Casson Construction Co. faces 7000 in liquidation damages for late completion and a 500 daily fine for delays from July 18 to August 1. The firm will be paid after minor work ends in the coming weeks. Green Hall move authorized with classes slated for early October.
