Amid a nationwide calm after rioting, Milwaukee eased its curfew with plans to reinstate it at midnight. Providence also loosened but kept a selective curfew in South Providence as police reported reduced violence and a measure of normalcy.
Professor John S. McNown of Kansas University headed a week long U.S. group in Kumasi Ghana July 9 to 14. The Ford Foundation sponsored gathering aimed to form a Middle Africa engineering education committee and promote international cooperation among universities governments and industry. McNown and his family plan a two to three month stay in Washington DC before Africa assignment with the American Council on Education.
Five die in an east of Tulsa collision. Victims include Paul W. King 18 a Kansas City youth and Rev. Paul McGrady 42 of Bethany Nazarene College. Others are Thurman Coburn 19 Luther Clayborn 32 and Cissna Clayborn 10. Two more in critical condition.
The Great Salt Lake in Utah becomes the largest body of water in the United States west of the Mississippi, surpassing competing basins and reshaping Western water geography.
A two car collision on Highway K 10 east of Eudora left Lloyd Wisdom with minor injuries. Wisdom and Lela J. Gumm 20 of De Soto drove in opposite lanes during a pass. Damage totaled about 200 to Gumm’s car and Wisdom’s vehicle was demolished.
A new 100 foot standpipe was erected at Baldwin city filtration plant. The tank arrived in two sections and was welded together to form a pressure stabilizer and small reservoir for the community.
President Johnson rebutted Governor Romney's accusation that politics influenced the Detroit troop deployment. He outlined constitutional requirements for using troops and provided a timeline of July 24 events. White House officials stressed no political maneuvering and dismissed further commentary.
Merrel D. Clubb of Kansas University English is among seven nationally known scholars chosen for KU's 21st annual Humanities Lecture Series. Clubb will speak Thursday, Nov. 30, in Swarthout Recital Hall, marking the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift's birth.
Lawrence police reported three thefts in the city. A $160 loss from Deems Farm Equipment Inc. included power shafts and jack stands stolen last month from 1110 E 23rd St. Jan McCullough reported two stereo tapes worth $60 stolen from a parking lot in the 1000 block of Mass St after 4 30 p.m. Thursday. Mrs A J Schumer reported clothing and tools stolen from her residence within the last 30 days. no loss estimate given.
Public hearing for Baldwin's 1968 city budget will be at 7 30 p m Aug. 14 at Baldwin City Hall. The budget calls for an 18 63 mill levy down from 19 119 this year with total expenditures of 451 855, up 59 483. Increased valuation to 1 999 974 from 1 925 579 drives the lower levy, offset by higher spending including a nursing home facility.
A Thursday evening two car collision on U S 30 ten miles west of Clinton killed three people and sent four others to hospital in critical condition. The deceased were Myrtie Elmer Journot 63 formerly of Fontana California and recently employed on a local construction project Allen Bentley 15 and his brother Paul 10 sons of Mrs Margaret Bentley of Clinton.
U S Command reports 197 strike missions in one day the highest in the 12 year bombing campaign with 635 combat planes lost including an F105. Navy pilots destroyed or damaged 72 coastal boats and hit rail facilities while airmen attacked bridges yards and antiaircraft sites.
Washington AP Dr John T Middleton head of the Public Health Service air pollution center notes that many small communities face serious pollution despite their size The center will expand reports from 20 metro areas to 65 and may rank smaller towns later New York leads with 457 percent St Louis 10th at 369 and Kansas City 25th at 285 percent
In Wichita an IRS show cause order to inspect the First National Bank of Neodesha records was postponed indefinitely. The suit sought to view the bank’s minute book to determine 1965 and 1966 tax liability. Judge Theis had set a hearing for August 10, but parties agreed to delay without explanation.
Kansas University associate professor of history Lynn Nelson won the H Bernard Fink Award of 1000 for teaching. He engages with students on campus and emphasizes thinking out loud in medieval history lectures while continuing research. Nelson earned degrees from Chicago and Texas, taught at KU since 1963, and has a son with wife Carolyn Ann.
Earl Rogers named Douglas County deputy sheriff to serve Baldwin area. Former Jefferson County undersheriff and Overbrook city marshal for two years. Begins next Monday. will reside in Baldwin with wife and two sons. Rogers replaces Clifford Casewell who resigned for Louisburg job.

County Clerk Delbert Mathia notes absentee ballots must be returned by noon Monday for Tuesday’s special election on the vehicle tax and Lecompton Bridge. City polls run 7 am to 7 pm and county polls 8 am to 6 pm.
