Kansas Prison Review Board denied parole for Sherman L. Galloway, convicted in two 1981 Lawrence rapes. Sentenced to 30 years to life in 1984, he remains at Lansing Correctional Facility with parole eligibility extended to seven-year increments and no imminent release. Jean Rhea, KU student at the time of the attacks, has led community opposition and urged a 10-year term.
A 28-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after being knocked down and kicked during a fight outside The Granada bar on Mass. Police said the street disturbance involved two suspects, with no arrests yet. A separate incident involved a 30-year-old woman briefly struck during an argument in the 900 block of Massachusetts Street.
Police described a Wednesday night fight at 1500 West 25th Court with possible knife and two by four threats. A laptop theft valued at 5000 may have occurred between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. at KU locations. A Baldwin City woman faced aggravated battery charges after a domestic dispute near North 100 Road with a knife injury. A KU student was struck by a vehicle near 19th Street and Barker Avenue around 2 a.m. Thursday, suffering a minor arm injury and treated at a hospital.
