Lawrence commission okays higher water and sewer charges with city bills in May and plans for rural districts and a study of natural gas rates. The move targets inflation and large users, raising the typical bill from 15.55 to 19.80, with min water and sewer increases highlighted.
A Senate House conference panel agreed on a 4 billion dollar public works jobs bill funding bridges, sewers, hospitals, and local projects. It could create 150 000 to 400 000 jobs depending on administration.
The Kansas Legislature reconvened for a three day session to consider a veto override on the personal income tax increase from 600 to 750 dollars and higher bracket tax hikes. Democrats split over funding a proposed medium security prison while voting on a massive set of next year appropriations. A subcommittee recommended 2.4 million dollars to reduce energy use at six universities and the medical center including 482 thousand for power management at KU, Emporia State.
The Commerce Department reports March imports at 12.5 billion, led by petroleum up 22.2 percent, pushing the monthly trade deficit to a record of 2.4 billion. Exports rose to 10.7 billion, with grain and aircraft shipments lifting first-quarter totals to 29.5 billion, while import growth lifts the annual rate to 141.6 billion.

Kaiser said she was relieved of duties yesterday and will receive severance pay. Kay Calvin, chairwoman, called the move surprising and provided few details. The authority runs Babcock Place and Edgewood Homes and faced attendance and low income housing concerns in a recent letter to the mayor and commissioners.
