Virginia Poll Tax Certificate Rule Struck by Supreme Court
The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that Virginia may not require a certificate of residence from voters in federal elections who have not paid the poll tax. The decision, by Chief Justice Earl Warren, marks the first case under the 24th Amendment and voids the six month pre election certificate rule adopted in 1963.
