Four KU students charged in theft of Kansan papers
Douglas County prosecutors filed one count each of criminal deprivation of property against Jameson Jones Lindsey Gaston R J Woodring and Drew Thompson for stealing thousands of University Daily Kansan copies on April 11 from a Lawrence loading dock. The theft, initially treated as felony theft due to an estimated loss of 1500 to 1900, was deemed criminal deprivation of property as a prank. The four confessed they stole the papers in anger over Kansan endorsements in student government elections. They face fines and bans from future student government, with options for diversion and repayment of losses.

Planning panel to study fire hydrant rule in subdivisions
Lawrence Douglas County Planning Commission will review an amendment to subdivision rules to require hydrants in county subdivisions. If water pressure is too low, dry hydrants will be installed using ponds as water sources. Kanwaka Township Fire Department chief Chris Lesser pushed the issue, noting quarter-acre ponds with special hydrants could cut homeowners insurance premiums when rural water districts cannot supply adequate water.
