Two Schools Collapse As Shocks Hit Lar

A devastating earthquake leveled Lar in southern Iran on Sunday killing about 700 and injuring thousands. Rescue teams recovered dozens of children from school debris as officials reported most victims were women and children. Iran pledged quick relief with air drops and tents, while authorities evacuated injured to Shiraz and other cities.

Pirates Kill Skipper and Steal Boat Off Bahama Island

Two American yachtsmen were attacked by pirates off a Bahama island. Captain Angus Boatwright, 55, was shot and killed after prisoners aboard the Muriel II took the crew’s valuables. The attack occurred near Elbow Cay as the pirates fled toward Cuba with Barbara Table, 18, Alvin Table, 23, and William Lees, 23, aboard. A Coast Guard plane hovered unable to intervene.

Skies to Turn Fair Tuesday

KU Relays and Expo draw about 15000 on campus

A weekend of KU Relays and the Engineering School Exposition drew an estimated 15 000 attendees including alumni parents and students. The 40th expo saw 16 KU departments compete for trophies with Electronics in Modern Medicine winning two awards and Engineering Physics taking the most educational display. Norman Shutler and Bob Hayes named outstanding students and Rear Admiral Pelter spoke at the banquet.

De Gaulle warns last moment for nuclear disarmament

President Charles de Gaulle told Congress at the White House that the great powers face their last moment to begin nuclear disarmament. He urged progress on German and Berlin issues through improved Soviet Western relations and called for a joint program of economic aid for Asia and Africa. He said Eisenhower Khrushchev and Macmillan cannot solve the East West problem at the summit next month but may set a path forward away from nuclear confrontation.

Fire Destroys Freight Car Cargo in Transit

A Union Pacific freight car bound for Phoenix was set alight by a dropped cigarette. About half the merchandise valued in the thousands was destroyed as the car was backed to a safer spot for firefighting. remaining items were salvaged. Fire damage to the car was extensive.
