Hershberger Breaks 21-Year Drought With Memorial Stadium Win
Jim Hershberger spent $125,000 of his own money to build the artificial track at Memorial Stadium. He won the Masters 880 at the Kansas Relays, clocking 2:03.5 to edge Loren Schnell of the Colorado Track Club who led briefly on the backstretch. The Wichita racer, 40, had a long drought at Memorial Stadium dating to 1951, when he last won there for Kansas.
