The 47th Kansas Relays drew about 32 000 fans under warm weather as Jim Royan won the Glenn Cunningham Mile. KU official John Novotny noted the crowd exceeded expectations and that program shortages kept many fans from obtaining items. He recalled last year’s misprint and smaller sales.
Crowds gathered as 7 000 to 8 000 students filled the venue while war dissenters staged a noisy, orderly protest. The distraction affected events including the Cunningham Mile won by Ryun in 3 57.1 over Von Ruden 3 57.9. Feuerbach won the open shot put at 69-1, while Matson, world record holder, posted 68-31⁄2 amid talk of Olympic Trials.
Oklahoma State star Jim Bolding edged Jim Ryun to be named outstanding at the Kansas Relays. Bolding won the intermediate hurdles in 50.4 seconds and ran on OSU's mile relay, drawing 10 votes from media. Ryun took the Glenn Cunningham Mile in 3:57.1 and earned nine votes.
Jayhawks concluded week four of spring drills with a 27-9 White victory. Ken Saathoff, a sophomore from Marysville, caught eight passes and scored a nine yard TD on a Bruegging pass. David Jaynes threw for 272 yards while Mike Cerne returned to drills. The spring schedule runs through a 7:30 p.m. game at Haskell Stadium.
