Pelathe center plans fund-raisers to aid youth programs
Hicks notes fewer teens join the tutoring program without paid work as incentive while cash shortages push Pelathe to rely more on volunteers. Despite this, food pantry, housing for homeless families, and New Dawn Native Dancers stay solvent. Fund-raisers planned next month aim to raise $45,000 to sustain youth efforts and prevent disenfranchisement.

Advocates to fight funding veto over disability program
Kansans with disabilities face a funding veto as lawmakers did not identify how the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services would raise the needed funds. Governor Sebelius called the program worthwhile but warned the state match must come from other SRS programs. If grants fail, a waiting list could begin Oct. 1, said Shannon Jones of the Independent Living Council. Mikesic argued the program pays for itself by helping many gain employment.
