The 17th annual Kansas Relays featured record breaks as Rice Institute star Fred Wolcott won the 120 yard high hurdles in 14.3 seconds, Tuskegee’s Mozel Ellerbe edged Michigan State in the 100 yard dash, and Kansas State College high jumper Elmer Hackney set a shot put record at 52 feet 1 inches. Riverside Jr College won the half mile relay and Kansas City high schools saw Southwest claim the half mile relay title.

Seventy one United States prisoners captured by the Spanish nationalist army in the civil war were sent into France at Hendaye. They were among 105 liberated brigade members and joined seven Cubans, four Chileans, eight Danes, and 15 Swedes. Topeka April 22 UPI State income tax collections on 76 000 individual returns and 3 250 corporate returns totaled 600 143 about 79 percent of last year for 1937 incomes John K Speck director said. The department works day and night and mail sacks were withheld at the office due to transfer of the tax commission.
