Kansas University students Bob House and Gary Popenoe built a curved cardboard maze from 500 feet of material donated by Lawrence Paper Co. for the Environmental Design and Research Association conference at the Ramada Inn. The amoeba shaped installation aims to invite delegates to linger and socialize, with hidden lights, plants, eating nooks, and moving holograms.
U S automakers boost output and recall workers amid cautious optimism. General Motors chairman Thomas Murphy says the economy bottomed out and signs of recovery appear, while Ford president Lee Ia cocca warns the climb back will be long as sales lag.
The Supreme Court refused to review Louisville Kentucky Jefferson County school desegregation rulings and rejected appeals by Indiana officials seeking exemptions for suburban districts. The Louisville system is about 50 50 white and black, with 80 percent of its schools racially identifiable. The county district is roughly 96 percent white, with 56 percent of black students in three of 103 schools.
Army Corps of Engineers reports Perry Lake near Lawrence drew about 7 500 visitors, Melvern Lake saw around 5 000, Milford Lake near Junction City had the biggest turnout though exact figures were unavailable. Sunday temps reached the upper 60s with water at 49 degrees and no swimming. A separate weekend incident left Steven Klopfenstein with severe wrist lacerations. Frank Castro and Ellen Sue Strouppe were arrested on aggravated battery and obstructing arrest, with bonds set at 15 000 and 700 respectively. Sirens and local warnings operated properly during a noon test.
Dr. David Robinson, 60, vice chancellor for clinical affairs and surgery professor, is named acting executive vice chancellor of Kansas University Medical Center effective June 1. He will bridge the gap until the permanent successor to Dr. William Rieke is chosen, with Rieke resigning May 31 to lead Pacific Lutheran University.
The widow Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Christina Onassis attended the memorial for Aristotle Onassis in Greece, maintaining distance at the service 40 days after the funeral. Christina arrived from Athens by plane for the Orthodox observance while Jacqueline spent the night aboard the Christina yacht.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Fahmy says Cairo will not join further Kissinger peace bids and backs resuming the Geneva conference in June. He demands the Palestine Liberation Organization be invited as an independent delega tion, a condition that could trigger an Israeli boycott. Fahmy spoke after a four hour Moscow meeting with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko. He said Egypt refuses to return to step by step talks.
The University of Kansas won the 1975 Missouri Valley College Speech Tournament at Creighton University in Omaha. LSU took second, Kansas State third. individual winners include Amy Haddad Creighton in oratory, Paulee Summerfield Oklahoma State in oral interpretation, Rich Williams Creighton in extemporaneous, and Cathy Chatten LSU in rhetorical criticism.
Orlando AP reports Mrs. Folwell, wife of Central Florida's Episcopalian bishop, now works a 9 am to 3 pm shift in the progressive care unit at Orange Memorial Hospital.
