British troops guarded key installations in Northern Ireland after weekend bomb blasts and Londonderry rioting. About 6 000 troops stationed in the region were ordered not to intervene in civil disorders, with police handling anti riot duties.
Dr. Carl S. Knox of USD 497 joins the State Advisory Council for Vocational Education as Gov. Docking signs the enabling bill. Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 am next Sunday nationwide except in Arizona Hawaii and Michigan. clocks move ahead next Saturday night. Greek Week book drive at Ballard Center in Lawrence nets about 2500 books with promises for 1000 to 1500 more.
Unified School District 497 votes on a policy to maintain one teacher per 25 students where feasible, with exceptions for Special education. It outlines transfers, combined rooms, and aides when ratios cannot be met, plus summer school, food service, and a postponed transportation contract from April 7.
Randy Canfield 6-10 two time All State at Wichita Southeast signed a Big Eight letter of intent to enroll at Kansas University. He averaged 22.4 points and 15 rebounds per game and set Wichita prep scoring records including 1331 points in 1968 69. The national letter of intent becomes effective May 21. Kansas State also announced its first Big Eight signee Steve Mitchell from Oklahoma City.
In Spandau Prison Berlin Rudolf Hess, 75, nears 23 years as a lone inmate held by the Big Four. He wears a Luftwaffe flying suit and his daily routine includes garden walks, guarded by rotating troops. Despite humanitarian release appeals, Russians reject moves while Americans consider modest comforts.
Heavy rains swell rivers in New England and the South while Mississippi levees near completion hold. Vermont roads flood. Connecticut River rises five feet in 24 hours at White River Junction. Augusta Georgia and Blountstown Florida face cresting flood levels. In Minot North Dakota the Souris River reaches 65 year highs forcing nearly 12 thousand from homes. other northern Midwest floods recede with Red River and Des Moines, Big Sioux, Minnesota subsiding.
Rebecca H. Wilson six suffered a fractured leg when her bicycle was struck by a car at 6 p.m. Sunday in front of 2349 Ousdahl Road. She was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released. One other person was treated and released at LMH and five people had minor injuries in weekend accidents. Witnesses said loose sand hindered stopping.
Kansas University announces three coeds Margare t McCoy Hiawatha freshman Susan Yeagley Marion freshman and Pam Reusser Cincinnati Ohio freshman as finalists for the NROTC Color Girl title. Finalists were selected from six semi finalists at the Kansas Union. The Color Girl will be named May 2 at the spring review and will reign over the ring dance May 3 in the Union.
A Kansas University coed reports a purse snatching on Mississippi Street about 11 50 p.m. Sunday. Judy Reichman from Kansas City said a white man in a blue jacket took her black shoulder bag containing about 3 50 and ID cards. James Vann helped and KU police were notified. In a separate incident, vandalism damaged W B Morgan’s 1969 model car near Memorial Stadium with $100 in damages.
A lone soldier died at an Ottawa hospital after his car ran under the rear of a trailer transport on U S 59 about seven miles south of Ottawa. The fatality occurred early today. The driver, Robert V. Long, 41, of Eudora, reported no injuries. The soldier’s name was not released. The highway patrol says dozing at the wheel is the likely cause.
Flags flew on public buildings and royal gun salutes rang out as Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 43rd birthday in London. The event referenced public observances and royal traditions.
Daryl M. Hall news editor of the Lawrence Journal World was chosen as the Kansas AP Wire Editors Association chairman at the annual Wichita meeting. He succeeds Marion Boner and had served as vice chairman this year. Al Balzer Wichita Beacon city editor was named vice chairman. Attendees included 21 Kansas dailies with talks on photo journalism by Rich Clarkson and design trends by Keith Ashley.
