Surplus delays postal hike in 1978 spring

Postmaster General Benjamin Bailor announced a 45.5 million dollar six month surplus for the U S Postal Service, a result of attrition reducing staff from 740000 to 653000. He said rate increases could be postponed until spring 1978 with possible 16 cent first class stamps and cuts to uneconomic services.

Election loser acquitted in Leavenworth assault case

Clyde Conaway of Leavenworth, 43, was acquitted in Leavenworth County District Court of an assault charge filed by rival challenger James Cook, 28, who defeated him by one vote in the April 5 city election. Conaway denied the accusation.

Wichita editor to visit Kansas journalism classes

Wichita Eagle and Beacon executive editor W. Davis Buzz Merritt Jr will spend Thursday and Friday as editor in residence at the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism. He will visit seven classes in reporting editing and editorial writing and meet with students outside class.

ISAs unhappy with KU probe into SAVAK activities

The group demanded the release of 36 political prisoners and their evacuation abroad, while government officials declined to comment.
