Douglas County officials say a jail expansion is legally required, yet no legal finding supports the assertion. The county’s informational brochure for a half cent sales tax cites a mandate to expand the jail and fund mental health efforts, but commissioners could not cite a backing ruling and instead stated they believe legal jeopardy could arise if the jail is not expanded.
Lawrence city commissioners voted 3-1 to raise pool entrance fees at the Lawrence Aquatic Centers for all ages. The increase will be $2 over the next two years and free admission for 3 and 4 year olds will end. Commissioner Leslie Soden opposed. Vice Mayor Lisa Larsen was absent.
Governor Jeff Colyer signed a school funding bill in a Sea man High School ceremony in Topeka, approving over 500 million dollars in K-12 funding over five years despite an 80 million dollar flaw in the bill’s rights language. The Legislature passed the measure just before adjourning its regular session in early April.
Wal letHub released its 2018 Best Small Cities to Start a Business list ranking 1,261 mid sized cities. Lawrence placed 653rd, second worst in Kansas, behind Dodge City Salina Hutchinson Manhattan Garden City Lenexa Shawnee Leawood.
