Lawrence areas named as potential opportunity zones

Gov. Jeff Colyer designated parts of Lawrence as opportunity zones along with 72 Kansas neighborhoods under the 2017 tax reform. The East Lawrence area, including downtown east, the Warehouse Arts District, two business parks, and KU campus west, are targeted to draw investment through tax incentives for unrealized capital gains. Lawrence Assistant City Manager Diane Stoddard said the city is hopeful but uncertain about the impact, citing pending projects like a downtown grocery and investments in the Warehouse Arts area.
