An American scout platoon and air cavalry reinforcements were pinned down by enemy fire for four hours near Black Virgin Mountain, 45 miles northwest of Saigon. Fifteen Americans killed and sixteen wounded as tanks and armored personnel carriers finally rescued them after a B52 strike.
John P. Harris led a unit that faced heavy losses after one enemy bunker and 72 damaged positions were overrun and the unit pinned in a fortified area by North Vietnamese machine gunners. Two Americans died and four were wounded in minutes. A reinforcing company from the 1st Air Cavalry Division arrived and also came under fire, with six more men killed and several wounded.
John P. Harris longtime publisher and eight newspaper radio group head died of a heart attack at a Hutchinson hospital. He led The Hutchinson News and eight dailies plus twelve radio stations, earning a Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for Kansas reapportionment coverage. Memorial services set at Grace Episcopal Church.

Lawrence High School announces nominations open today through Friday for the 1969 Spring Queen. Seniors may be nominated. six finalists will be chosen by an April 21 school vote, with queen and two runners up elected April 25 and crowned May 6 at the Lawrence Relays in Haskell Stadium. The queen's name remains secret until crowning.
Revers Shears 26 of 732 Conn. St posted $500 bond to appear in Douglas County Court on Friday on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Police say he threatened Irene Hunter 1220 NJ St at the Holiday Inn where both work. Hunter was struck on the right side of her head after an altercation in a room.

Unmarried women ages 18-28 who have lived in Lawrence at least six months may enter after interviews and competitions for talent swimsuit and evening gown.
