Franklin D Roosevelt, 63, dies at Warm Springs Georgia from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Harry S Truman becomes president as nation mourns and prepares for a transition. Funeral plans set for Washington and Hyde Park with simple rites.
Chiefs of State and Military Affairs gather at the White House to align wartime policy under President Truman following Roosevelt's death. Stimson King Marshall Leahy and Stettinius attend as Truman vows to carry on Roosevelt policies and prepare for UN conference in San Francisco.
Stalin announced the capture of Vienna after eight days of bloody street fighting along the Danube. The fall marked a major Allied advance, with 11 German tank divisions routed and more than 130,000 German personnel captured. Moscow reported Soviet spearheads nearing Brunn and Vienna’s strategic position as a defense center for routes into southern Germany.

Four of five Lawrence Memorial high school entries in today’s University of Kansas district Music Festival earned first ratings. Blanche Pierson led piano with a first rating. First ratings were earned by the saxophone quartet and clarinet quartet and a brass sextet with named players. The trombone quartet received two seconds. Oliver Hobbs directs the Lawrence groups as 600 students from 40 high schools compete under the State High School Activities Association.
Premier Marshal Stalin led Russians in expressing deep personal grief at Franklin D Roosevelt's death and stated the nation desired continued collaboration with the United States along the lines set by the late president. A stock market index shows 60 stocks at 62.4.
All men of the community are invited to attend a meeting of the Men’s Christian Alliance Sunday at 2 30 pm at the Methodist church. Washington April 18 The Republican senate conference representing 40 of 96 members pledged faith and trust in President Truman as Congress paused for memorials to Roosevelt. They urged unity to aid the war effort and a successful peace, directing a committee to confer with the president at his convenience. The telegram was signed by Senator Vandenberg Michigan and Senator Burton Ohio.
Washington April 13 President Truman proclaimed a national day of mourning for Franklin D Roosevelt to be observed April 14 with church services. Stettinius ordered federal offices closed tomorrow afternoon and flags at half staff until May 14. The proclamation honors the late 32nd president and outlines solemn observances across the United States. Allied forces push through Germany on multiple fronts near Leipzig and the Elbe. Ninth Army closes within 45 miles of Berlin and 7 miles of Leipzig while First Army drives 18 miles from Leipzig toward Czechoslovakia. Third Army nears Jena and Erfurt as German pockets shrink with tens of thousands captured.
The body of President Franklin Roosevelt died yesterday in Warm Springs Georgia is en route on a 28 hour train to Washington for funeral services there and burial Sunday at Hyde Park New York. The 10 car special train carries many friends and associates and departed Fort Benning troops provide an honor guard. Pallbearers from the army navy and other services march to the depot as polio patients watch from the Warm Springs Foundation building the last farewell to their benefactor.
President Truman told Senators he will outline foreign policies briefly at a 1 pm joint session. He plans a radio address to armed forces Tuesday night to reaffirm Roosevelt’s policies and urge vigorous victory. Fornes arrived from South Carolina to offer services as Byrnes’ nomination for vice presidency had earlier been championed.
Lawrence leaders call for a five minute period of silence at 3 pm as funeral services for President Roosevelt begin in Washington. Sunflower Ordnance Works will fly the flag at half mast for 30 days while production continues. Local schools and students hold services and memorial programs honoring the late president.
Lt. (ig) John Elliott Penner USNR, 34, killed in action with the Navy Air Combat Service intelligence division in the South Pacific. A University of Kansas graduate, he worked at Hutchinson News-Herald, married Charlotte Richardson in 1936, and is survived by his wife and their seven-year-old son Jon. Telegram did not state the death date.
