President Ford delivers a somber address to Congress warning of a troubled world scene. He calls for action with a deadline and emphasizes national unity while facing sparse applause and many empty seats in the House chamber. He closes with a prayerful note urging what is right.
Alf Landon former Kansas governor and 1936 Republican nominee will receive a citizenship award at Baker University fourth annual awards banquet and dance in Kansas City Missouri. Other honorees include former state senator C Y Thomas and Rev James Chubb with inaugural events at Baldwin and a keynote by Ralph K Huitt executive secretary of the NASULGC.
The Kansas University Student Senate and Finance and Auditing Committee plan a Saturday meeting in the Kansas Union Meadowlark Room to build funding recommendations from a $12,466 contingency plus $8,500 available after cutting the operating budget. They may reduce line items, with a full vote next Wednesday.
Seven Mansfield anesthesiologists halted nonemergency operations as their malpractice policy expired and insurers declined renewal at current rates. Two area hospitals canceled about 55 operations in two days while admissions fell about half, prompting talks with hospital admins and state insurance officials for a solution.
Lawrence residents will share 138000 in natural gas refunds from Kansas Public Service Gas. The refunds follow the Federal Power Commission disallowing part of a Cities Service Gas Co. rate hike last year. Checks mailed end of the first week in May based on last year's gas use. Also tonight at 8 KU Hoch Auditorium hosts bluegrass by the Vassar Clements Band John Hartford and Norman Blake. Hartford wrote Gentle on My Mind. Sponsored by KU Student Union Activities.
The Association of University Residence Halls schedules a street dance behind Templin Hall from 4 30 p m to midnight Saturday with five bands and 40 kegs of beer. A carnival planned for April 29 to May 4 was delayed and will not accompany the dance. Last year the group profit ranged from 300 to 400 dollars and they were invited back.
President Ford will address 5,000 graduates at the University of Pennsylvania commencement on May 18 marking the 200th anniversary of the 1775 graduation attended by George Washington and Continental Congress members. He will also receive an honorary degree.
Charles Wesley Roberts, former Republican national chairman under President Eisenhower, died in Alexandria Virginia after a heart attack at age 71. A Kansan and native of Oskaloosa, he resigned in 1953 after brief tenure amid lobbying law questions. Survivors include his wife Ruth and son Patrick. services in Oskaloosa followed by burial at Pleasant View Cemetery.
Senate votes down a proposal to bar using federal funds for abortion, saying it would discriminate against the poor. An adjacent measure makes it a federal crime to coerce welfare recipients into abortion or sterilization in U.S. funded programs.
The Kansas House passed a $23 million payroll bill boosting Civil Service salaries and raising pay for the governor and lawmakers. The measure would raise lawmakers from 35 to 50 dollars per day and committee pay, while the Senate eyed a light schedule and possible Saturday session to tackle House actions. No AG salary increase.
The government rests after 36 witnesses in the Connally bribery case with Edward Bennett Williams set to request a directed verdict of innocence. Jake Jacobsen testified he gave Connally two illegal $5,000 payoffs in 1971 to push milk price boosts, later claiming a cover up in 1973. he also admitted past perjury and memory gaps. Connally denies taking the money and says only they two were present at key meetings. Jury credibility hinges on whose account is believed.
The Senate Banking Committee endorsed a major housing aid package to spur construction of about 400000 homes and create 650000 jobs, despite likely opposition from the Ford administration. The bill would set an 8 percent interest cap on government and aided mortgages and include a 6 percent mortgage option or a $1000 down payment credit.
Harry F. Duncan of Kansas City Kansas had a first degree murder charge dismissed in Leavenworth County District Court due to insufficient evidence. County Attorney Patrick Reardon said charges could be filed again later and noted no statute of limitations on murder. Duncan faced a second Johnson County charge and had been held for psychiatric evaluation at Larned State Hospital before being deemed competent to stand trial.
