Delta Flight Returns to San Francisco After Russian Airspace Violation
A Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Japan reversed course after Russian controllers said the jet lacked clearance to fly through their airspace. With 203 passengers and 15 crew, the plane turned around about 20 minutes into Russian airspace, then rerouted for a 5 1/2 hour Pacific crossing to land in San Francisco. Passengers received hotel rooms and a $6 meal voucher and were rebooked on Japan-bound flights. Passenger Bill Reilly complained the detour would have been faster by car.
