Grim view of district finances pushes hard budget cuts

Weseman warned that tax cuts strain revenue for public schools. Lawrence district budget panel, meeting at Free State High, weighs 3.3 million in new spending for 2001-2002 amid projected 14 percent rise in health costs and $185.5 million less state revenue expected by July 2002. The panel questions funding for police in schools, nine elementary library assistants, and all day kindergarten while preserving teacher raises and avoiding deep program cuts without larger state aid.
