A 4.5 magnitude quake surprised central Italy on Sunday, prompting fans to flee a small Umbrian stadium and tourists to rush from St. Francis Basilica in Assisi. No injuries reported, Assisi basilica upper level remains closed since September. Separately, Japan opened the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge designed to withstand an 8.5 quake with a 12,906 foot main span. More than 2 million Muslims began the Mecca pilgrimage, with precautions like fireproof tents to prevent disasters after last year’s deadly fire.
