New industry report by SmithKline Beecham shows five percent of workers tested positive for illegal substances last year, down from 5.8 percent in 1996. Marijuana remains the drug of choice, detected in 60 percent of positive tests, while cocaine use fell from about 23 percent to under 17 percent.
Dr. Donald L. MacNay, 61, an orthopedic surgeon with no cancer training, faces two counts of dispensing a controlled substance and two counts of false pretenses after a state police probe into four patient deaths. His license was revoked February 28.
Grammy nominated singer Tammy Wynette known as the first lady of country music died Monday in Nashville. Her death followed years of health problems and is believed caused by a blood clot. Russia’s Constitutional Court backed Parliament’s move to keep World War II trophy art seized from Germany in Russian custody. President Yeltsin, who seeks a broader deal with Germany, had vetoed the law citing procedure, but the court ruled he must sign. The bill sets tough conditions for any return or exchange of artworks.
