Allied task forces push four miles north of the Korean border amid heavy communist resistance near Topyong as American patrols probe parallel 38. Sabre jets claim four MIGs destroyed and seven damaged with no allied losses.
A public meeting of the Mental Health council will be held Friday April 13 at 3 PM in the court room of the new city building. Lawrence and Douglas County residents may learn about the Kansas program for exceptional children and Bert Nash clinic progress. William D Wolfe Lawrence schools superintendent will discuss plans for special teachers for children needing extra help. Dr Sigmund Gundle and Mrs Juliette Clapp of Bert Nash staff will speak briefly.
Topeka April 4 Governor Arn Hutchinson refused clemency for Preston F. McBride of Wichita sentenced to die for slaying Hutchinson taxicab driver John Watkins. McBride’s appeal was denied after detailed re-examination and Kansas Supreme Court affirmation of the death penalty. The condemned man is to be executed Friday morning at the state penitentiary.
Voters ousted three incumbent school board members in Topeka and chose a 33 year old mayor, restoring city officials to two year terms. The pole saw major changes amid state election day upheaval with Wichita approving a large bond for new schools.
Dr Kenneth McFarland asks release from his two year superintendent contract ending August 1. He will stay in position until new board members take office and plans to continue public speaking.
Lacy C. Haynes 63 longtime Kansas City Star Kansas City Kan bureau head died today after a stroke March 18. He joined the Star in 1910 and led the bureau 36 years guiding political coverage. He married Mary Lindsay in 1914 and is survived by his wife three children a grandson and a brother. Funeral services will be at Fulton chapel with burial in Highland Park cemetery.
Thirty workers in the business district met at the Eldridge hotel for coffee and to receive instructions from county chairman John Andrews. Led by Clayton Stone, the team will solicit funds this week and aim to finish the canvass by Saturday. The group reports to treasurer Mrs. Bob Van Noy with headquarters daily at Boggs and Albert Millinery, Ninth and Vermont streets. Additional supplies available at the party’s TS sedeotel.
District Judge Hugh Means sentenced 18 year old David K Fleagle of 1026 Ohio to the state reformatory at Hutchinson after his attorney entered a guilty plea on two counts of second degree burglary and grand larceny. Fleagle, nephew of Jake Fleagle the 1920s Kansas desperado, was arrested February 23 for a spree of fraternity and sorority house robberies at the University of Kansas. He admitted thefts totaling about 2500 to 3000 dollars. Consecutive terms on both counts replace any possibility of concurrent sentences. probation request was made but not ruled on. The Lawrence youth remains in county jail on a 5000 dollar bond as his family, including KU graduates and a attorney brother, watched.
Baldwin Lecompton and Eudora elected mayors and council members without opposition. Lecompton approved a 40 325 water works bond 5 to 82. Bradley and Reeves led Baldwin results while Westerhouse, Walker, Long, Mercier, Adams and Colman won in Eudora. Mayor Schmidt lost in Lecompton. incumbents retained in county seats.
Kansas City April 43 The district Office of Price Stabilization warns thousands of merchants are mailing pricing charts to Washington. Charts must go to the district office in Wichita at 3234 E Douglas instead. Sending to Washington slows processing.
UPI reports that Iola and Gas City, two miles apart, both elected mayors named Charles Wilson. The Health Board meets at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in City Hall as part of regular Douglas County health board business.
The U S Senate votes 45 to 41 to invite western Germany and Spain into the North Atlantic defense plan while opposing a lawmaking bill. President Truman faces limits on troop deployment as the chamber endorses four divisions for Eisenhower’s Atlantic army with later action postponed.
New York report notes closing average of 60 stocks as of April 4 with figures showing early movement. Analysts monitor trends in industrials and rails as trading resumes.
Washington reports first troop units from four added army divisions are ready to move to Europe. Pentagon indications say movement schedules await Congress action on troops resolution. Charles E Wilson defense mobilization chief says labor in plants nationwide cooperates well but dissension remains with top leaders withdrawn in February. The effort is on to improve understanding between labor and defense programs.
Senator Fulbright's banking subcommittee will vote which panel takes over the probe into rich profits from surplus ship deals. Testimony tied Joseph E. Casey to millions in tanker profits, with figures cited for oil tankers bought from the old Maritime Commission. The group may also seek to compel White House aide Donald Dawson to reply to accusations of a political influence ring.
Jackie Parria, sixteen, was freed early today by a posse after police say ex convict Robert M. Phillips abducted her and her skating date Sunday night in McAlester Oklahoma. They found the girl beside a fire atop Blue Mountain near Kinta nine miles south of McAlester. Phillips was surrounded at the scene. he faced kidnapping charges as Sheriff Bill Alexander coordinated the arrest. The girl reported the assailant assaulted her about two hours before the rescue.
Judge Walter A. Hoxman will be principal speaker at the dedication ceremony Sunday at 2 30 pm in the second floor auditorium of the new fire and police building. Mayor W J B Turner arranged the program and will have contractor C L Constant present keys to the new building to the current council and transfer them to newly elected city commissioners.
The board of education approved issuing 2,620,000 in bonds around June 1 to fund Cordley School construction and the new senior high building. Voter authorizations totaled 2,620,000 in 1943 and 1949. Bond attorney Robert E. Fizzell was retained to assist with sale, at one dollar per thousand, based on Stewart’s recommendation to secure legal opinions to boost bids. Seven teachers were hired including Esther Rice and Tessye Motley.
In Kansas cloudiness rises as showers are forecast for eastern and north central areas. Forecaster Richard Garrett notes light, scattered precipitation with warmer nights and a cooling trend. Lows expected 35-40 in the northwest to 50-55 in the southeast. highs 60-64 north to 75 in the south. Yesterday’s highs reached 60s to 70s. Goodland down to 24 degrees.
In Lawrence the March 20 primary winners Chris Kraft Lewenry G W Bradshaw and John Crown were re elected in yesterday’s balloting. Simon Hurchfield, Kraft, Lewenry, Bradshaw and Crown will lead the 10 man city government after April. Ralph Pine led the District No 6 school board race with 2514 votes as Shenk and Ray Wright join the board. County voters approved two measures including a two year levy for the 4 H fairgrounds site and the sale of the old county shops property. Lawrence approved the levy 2263 to ama and the sale 4164 to 6 with 24 in city.
