In Liberal Kansas on April 3 a 57 year old mother of eight, held over the attack on her two youngest children, will be committed to the state hospital for a 30 day observation period by psychiatrists under an agreement with Mrs Howard Smith and county officials. Weather Boosts Lawrence General Election Turnout
Clear skies and near 60 degree temperatures helped an expected hefty turnout in Lawrence for today’s general election. Voters had passed 1,700 by early afternoon in a race for five city commission seats led by Simon Hurwitz with 907 votes and included Chris Kraft and Lew Henry. In the school board contest Ralph Pine led with 736 while Henry Shenk and Mrs Ray Wright trailed closely. A one mill two year levy for the 4 H fairgrounds drew a narrow margin of about 100 votes in the city wards, likely to pass countywide due to rural support.
