One Room Damaged By Apartment Blaze

Fire severely damaged a single upstairs room at 1045 Wt. St when a blaze broke out Friday evening. Neighbors reported the Brays were away as Fire Chief John Miller said heat burned through the floor and furnishings were ruined. The department returned about 8 50 p.m. when a mattress on the ground reignited.

Target Practice Causes Power Outage In Lawrence

A burned utility pole on Kasold Terrace near Highway 40 disrupted power across lawrence including KU area and Iowa Street corridor. Kansas Power and Light reported insulator-targeting caused the fire and line break. Restoration times ranged from 31 to 60 minutes with officials warning of serious danger from stray bullets.

Opening of Big Barn draws about 300 teens

About 300 Lawrence teenagers attended the opening of the Big Barn, formerly the Jenny Wren barn two miles west of Lawrence on Highway 40. Cecil Green and W. W. Hatfield remodeled it and now run the venue with live music tonight from 8 to midnight plus a snack bar offering hamburgers french fries and soft drinks.

In Ogden Kansas a car veered into a flood swollen creek after hitting a bridge abutment. Seventeen year old Anna J Murphy of Manhattan was found dead inside the vehicle.
