Cole's New Colossal Show opens Wednesday the 26th featuring a Roman hippodrome with real racing on a large track and English and Kentucky thoroughbreds. Also Dr W F Carver's Wild West exhibition with Indians cowboys and scouts, a Montezuma land band of ranqueros, Mexican curios, and an expanded menagerie including new lions tigers and other beasts from Hamble and Liverpool.
The State Mastic Teachers Association schedules a May 13 and 14 meeting in Lawrence to form a permanent Kansas State Teachers Association. Prof. William MacDonald leads arrangements, with an official welcome and program including papers on vocal methods and literary training for musicians. The event precedes the Friday night high school commencement at the opera house with a large graduating class of 38 students, led by salutatory and valedictory addresses and various essays.
The Kanaas Farmer reports crop prospects from April 30 noting growing wheat and oats, extensive corn stored for home use, about half of corn acreage planted, good land prospects, tame grasses thriving, stock in fair to good condition with hog cholera in a few cases. Riddell named physician to Haskell Institute. M Spencer secures U.S. rights for a watering apparatus.
The twelfth annual Inter State Collegiate Oratorical Association contest drew over 15000 to University Hall. Winners included E C Ritsher Beloit College first and H H Russell Oberlin College second with prizes of seventy five and fifty dollars respectively. The event featured nine finalists from Minnesota, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa with judges from Michigan Wisconsin Ohio and Kansas. A banquet followed and a meeting at Eldridge House elected new officers and set Bloomington Illinois as next site.
An executive committee meeting of the Trotting Horse Breeders association was held in Topeka. Members from Lawrence Atchison Minneapolis and Manhattan discussed prospects and decided to hold the annual trotting meeting at Bismarck Grove Lawrence on August 31 and September 1 and 2 with a full program to follow.
