United States Consul Johnson at Venice reports Italian bicycle production is fair but locals prefer foreign wheels. If American makers offer three grades at about 57.90, 66465 and 115.80 dollars each, a strong market could develop. Women’s cycling is rising slowly due to traditional prejudice, with only about five percent of bicycle users being women.

Washington March 1 The fifty fourth Congress ends its final session amid debates over large spending with appropriations far surpassing one billion dollars. Despite a stated aim to avoid new costly legislation, river harbor and public building funding continued, pensions rose, and notable bills remain in the President’s hands including immigration and death penalty reforms led by General Curtis. Other acts authorize mineral land patents, extend railroad land purchases, confirm settlers titles in Oklahoma and Mississippi, and grant rail rights of way through Indian Territory.
Chicago and Alton fast mail train bound east wrecked near Mansiona Missouri killing engineer C G Eherit and brakeman Charles Reymal as eight cars overturned on a sharp downhill curve. The incident follows other distant dispatches from Oklahoma and Louisiana.
Washington crowds increase as preparations for McKinley’s arrival proceed. The main inaugural arena along Pennsylvania Avenue between Fifteenth and Seventeenth streets is prepared with uniform grandstands. The McKinley party has private dining and security measures at the Ebbitt House. Chief police and detectives bolster protection, with railroad police ready to deter crime before the event.
