Readers of The Gazette vote for the most popular young lady in Douglas County to win a $45 gold watch. Vote by sending coupons with the name, or pay one dollar for a year to receive 100 votes. The contest closes at noon on April 26, 1894, with the winner announced thereafter.
John P Nace chosen as assistant postmaster to George Innes with a $40,000 bond and sureties James Donnelly J D Bowersock F W Barteldes E H F Schneider and Col O E Learnard. Bond sent to Washington. Innes to assume duties likely by May 1. Nace, son of Col William M Nace of Lecompton, is a long time Douglas county Democrat and longtime employee at Innes dry goods, praised for integrity and diligence.
The Gazette announces the gold watch contest for Douglas county’s most popular young lady closing Thursday noon. Votes tallied show Miss Palmateer leading with 2,553 followed by Miss Koehler 710 Miss Suiter 518 Miss Heise 103 and others. The final count will be released after voting ends. A Sunday School convention is set for Bethel Church April 24 with a full program.
The Lawrence area shows strong merchant support and growing weekly circulation. The Gazette notes increased subscribers since March, widespread distribution in Douglas County, and its role in delivering news and special correspondence from over 20 neighborhoods. A wedding anniversary and birthday surprise held last evening on Connecticut Street near Quincy celebrated the twenty first anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Lohman and the eighteenth birthday of their son John. The event featured a large gathering, gifts including a watch and a rocker, and a festive supper with the English Lutheran Sunday School group and pastor in attendance.
Two boys uncover a fully developed white female infant at the bottom of a 25 foot open well on 1309 Kentucky Street. The discovery leads to investigation at the haunted house near 1321 Kentucky and coroner inquest into a possible birth and crime with witnesses summoned.
A warrant for Mrs. Brill of Media accuses her of shop lifting from multiple stores including Hume’s Sumnerfield’s and the Cashie. Deputies pursued her to the depot but trains left. goods were recovered and later burned after settlement with her husband and local citizens.
Micario L. Andrews of Baldwin and Will Moorhead of Hopkins Mo were married at Dr and Mrs Martin's Bald win yester noon Rev J Moorhead officiated. The ceremony was small with relatives and a few Lawrence friends. They will reside in Hopkins after a wedding dinner in Lawrence.
